Panauti Nepal is 32km from Kathmandu, estimated 2 hour drive directly from Kathmandu. This is a UNESCO town and a living museum with 40 ancient temples & 28 festivals.

“Please pay a visit to Panauti while you are in Kathmandu.” I think, this will be my advise to most of my guests who has extra day in Nepal starting from my visit in Panauti.

I love Panauti, this is my favorite place in Nepal so far. I love the culture of Nepal, I like antique buildings, I love to see smiling faces, I like less touristic spot. And, this Panauti, no tourists at all, we are the only two tourist of the day.

Almost all the houses in Panauti remains as their original with a lot of arts on wood cravings on doors, windows, and a lot of smiling people. You will be really happy by visiting Panauti.

This is a photogenic town which you can take a lot of good pictures.

I have been living in Nepal on and off for 4.5 years now. I felt for the charm of the historical ancient buildings architecture with a lot of cravings on woods. For me, they are so beutiful, raw and and so much to tell about the people and culture of Nepal.

After 2014 earthquake, most of the nice historical buildings and temples in Kathmandu valley were destroyed especially in Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square and Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Now, rebuilt with new and modern buildings which have lost the original charm.

What to see in Panauti Nepal?

Panauti is a living museum with 40 ancient temples and 28 festivals. You can see temples everywhere in this charming town. We did not visit all the sight as we only have a few hours before day getting dark.

Read below, these are the reasons why you should spare a day to visit Panauti Nepal.

  1. Khware or Tribeni Ghat

This is the first sight you will see when you travel from Namo Buddha to Panauti, right before you enter the Panauti Town.

This shrine area located between the Punyamati and Roshi streams, a lot of ducklings (a lot means a few thousands) swimming and playing at the river.

I was so excited when I see a site similar to Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. We asked the locals, was told this is the place for cremation, which serve the same purpose as Pashupatinath Temple.

Khware has been regarded as a tirtha (place of sacred power), every year, in Janaury, Khware will draw hundreds to thousands of people to come here for the holy bath. They will block the river and make a big pond for the ritual.
