Wood carvings is an art and pride that practiced in Nepal from many centuries . You can see the finest example of Nepali wood carvings in temples, statues, palaces and residential buildings. The most common themes of Nepal’s wood carving are Hindu and Buddhist deities and symbols, scenes of everyday life, animals and erotica.

The tradition of woodcarving in Nepal goes back to the 12 century. Newars of Kathmandu Valley are world renowned for their wood carving skills. The carvers have achieved great skill by passing secrets from generation to generation and acquiring and sharing new techniques.

The craftsmanship has been handed down many generations and are now being pursued by new generation of Newari artists. The finest examples of medieval wood carving can be seen in Bhaktapur. The most impressive and well-known are the “55 windows” of the former royal palace and the “peacock” window.Today wood carvings are famous among tourists as souvenirs.
