Chitwan National Park is the most famous national park in Nepal and is located close to Kathmandu. It is well known for jungle safaris, especially for spotting the one-horned rhinoceros. The park is also home to Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, deer, birds, and many other wildlife species. Because it is easy to reach from both Kathmandu and Pokhara, Chitwan has been a top choice for visitors since it opened. Before visiting the park, it is helpful to know some important travel information.
Chitwan National Park is about 169 km from Kathmandu. It takes 5–6 hours by road or 20 minutes by flight. You can fly from Kathmandu to Bharatpur Airport for about USD 120, then take a taxi to Sauraha for around USD 20. You can also travel by private car, which costs about USD 100–120. Tourist buses leave in the morning from Thamel or Kalanki and cost about USD 12. Local buses are cheaper (USD 6–8) but are crowded and less comfortable.
Chitwan National Park is about 150 km from Pokhara. The journey takes around 4 hours by private vehicle and about 5 hours by tourist bus. Public transportation is also available, but it may take a little longer.
The drive is scenic and comfortable; however, during the monsoon season, there may be occasional landslides.
You can also fly from Pokhara to Bharatpur Airport. There is usually one flight per day, costing around USD 75 per person, one way. When airport check-in and possible delays are considered, both road and flight options take a similar total time.
Chitwan is about 150 km from Lumbini and takes around 5 hours by private vehicle. Travel may be faster once road maintenance is complete.
There is no direct bus or flight between Lumbini and Chitwan. Public transport is available but may require one or two vehicle changes. The easiest option is to travel by private vehicle.

The best time to visit Chitwan for a jungle safari is during the dry season, from October to March. During these months, the weather is clear, with no rain, and visibility is good for wildlife viewing. Dry grass and open trails make it easier to see animals.
April and May are also possible for safaris. The weather is warmer, but wildlife sightings are still good.
It is best to avoid the rainy season (June to September), as heavy rain can cause flooding, especially in the Rapti River, and safari activities may be limited.
While Chitwan itself is the main highlight, there are a few interesting nearby attractions:
Taste Local Food: Try traditional Tharu dishes like rice, fish, and duck. Take photos with Tharu villagers in their traditional mud huts and dresses.
Tower Night Stay: Spend a night in a jungle tower to observe nocturnal animals. A unique, once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience.
Elephant Bathing: Enjoy bathing and playing with elephants—a fun and unforgettable activity!
Kulchi (Elephant Food Making): Join the mahout (elephant keeper) to make Kulchi, a mix of paddy, local grass, and minerals, also called elephant sandwiches. Later, feed the elephants and take selfies while interacting with them.
Elephant Fruit Feeding: Take some fresh fruits and offer them to the elephants. Enjoy bonding with the elephants and their babies, a joyful and memorable experience for all ages.
Chitwan National Park covers an area of about 952.63 square kilometers, making it one of the largest national parks in Nepal. Nowadays, Nepal does not allow hotels or resorts inside the park, as the park is meant only for wildlife. Because of this, many hotels have moved outside the park area. Below are the most popular places to stay overnight in Chitwan.
Sauraha is the main tourist hub for visitors to Chitwan National Park. It offers many budget to luxury accommodations and easy access to jungle activities. Sauraha also has a tourist bus station, making travel to and from Chitwan smooth, easy, and economical.
Meghauli is about 42 km from Bharatpur, around one hour by drive. It is quietly becoming the second most attractive destination for visitors to Chitwan National Park. Both budget and luxury accommodations are available here. Barahi Jungle Lodge and Taj Safari are the most famous hotels, and some homestays are also available in the area.
Bharatpur is a convenient place to stay near Chitwan National Park. It has a nearby domestic airport, making it easily accessible. The city offers both business hotels and jungle safari lodges, suitable for different types of travelers.
Nawalparasi is about one hour’s drive from Bharatpur. It is known for jungle safaris, especially for spotting dolphins and other wildlife. Located along the Narayani River, it is a peaceful area. If you are looking for quiet accommodation away from crowds, Nawalparasi is a great choice.
Jagatpur is about 32 km from Bharatpur, around a one-hour drive. Located near Chitwan National Park, it is peaceful and known for luxury resorts like Jagatpur Lodge by Annapurna and Soaltee Westend Resort.
