The Kudan Tilaurakot Niglihawa Gotihawa day tour from Kathmandu offers a visit to the following sacred Buddhist sites around Lumbini.
Tilaurakot is 28km west of Lumbini, known as ancient Kapilvastu, where Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) lived for 29 years. It’s situated on the banks of the Banganga River and is a significant spiritual and historical site. If you can find the time, visit the museum too.
Located just 5km southwest of Taulihawa, Gotihawa is a sacred Buddhist site in Lumbini. It is believed that Krakuchhanda Buddha, one of the previous Buddhas, was born and attained enlightenment here. In 249 BC, the great Emperor Asoka visited and erected a stone pillar and a large stupa in honor of Krakuchhanda Buddha.
Niglihawa – Birth place of Kanakmani Buddha is about 7km northeast of Taulihawa. Emperor Asoka (Indian king) visited in 249 BC and placed a stone pillar with inscriptions. It shows, he enlarged the stupa, worshiped it, and marked the birthplace of Kanakamuni Buddha during his 20th year as emperor. The pillar also has an inscription from King Ripu Malla (Nepalese king) in 1312 AD.
Sagarhawa is located approximately 6 miles north of Tilaurakot palace. It contains the remains of thousands of stupas built for members of the Shakya clan who were killed during the third war against the Shakya Kingdom led by King Virudhaka of Kosala during Gautam Buddha’s time. It is believed that the Buddha asked him not to attack the Shakya Kingdom twice, but he did not heed the warning the third time
Nyigrodharama, now known as Kudan or Lori-Ki Kudan, is an ancient site 3km south of Taulihawa. It’s a important Buddhist site in Lumbini because after Buddha became enlightened, he returned to his hometown but didn’t visit his palace. He met his father, son, relatives and friends in Kudan, where it’s believed he gave a sermon. Some scholars think it’s also where Krakuchhanda Buddha was born.
Sisahaniya is an important archaeological site from the Maurya-Kushan era. It is believed that the Sakyas built a fort and a Buddhist monastery containing a precious corporeal relic of the Buddha, which they had received as one-eighth of their share. However, the relic was eventually taken away. An excavation team led by Prof. Giovanni Verardi, along with some Nepalese scholars, found important evidence such as iron pieces, pottery, and terra-cotta figurines from the Kusana Period.
